In the early hours of March 19, 2022, a vibrant night on Granby Street in Norfolk, Virginia, turned into a scene of tragedy. Devon 'Malik' Harris, a 25-year-old man from Portsmouth, was fatally shot in a violent altercation that erupted outside Chicho's Pizza shortly before 2:00 a.m. Harris, a semi-pro football player known for his gentle nature, was an innocent bystander caught in the crossfire. He was pronounced deceased at the scene.
The shooting also claimed the lives of 25-year-old Sierra Jenkins, a reporter for The Virginian-Pilot who was leaving the restaurant with a friend, and 24-year-old Marquel S. Andrews of Portsmouth, who succumbed to his injuries in April. Two other men sustained non-life-threatening gunshot wounds but were expected to recover.
The incident that led to the deadly shooting reportedly began with an argument over a spilled drink inside the restaurant. Investigators identified Antoine Legrande Jr., 24 at the time, as the suspect responsible for the shooting. In May 2022, nearly two months after the incident, Norfolk police announced Legrande's arrest. He was taken into custody and faced a series of charges, including three counts of second-degree murder, five counts of use of a firearm, and two counts of malicious wounding.
The arrest brought a measure of relief to the families of the victims, though they acknowledged it was just the first step in a long road to justice. The senseless violence of that night left a lasting scar on the community and highlighted the tragic consequences of gun violence. Devon Harris, a promising young athlete with a passion for teaching football to children, was remembered by his loved ones for his positive impact on those around him. His untimely death, along with the deaths of Sierra Jenkins and Marquel Andrews, served as a grim reminder of the fragility of life.
