In the early morning hours of May 6, 2022, the life of 37-year-old Nathaniel Dion Jones was tragically cut short in Winchester, Virginia. Authorities responded to the 1800 block of Henry Avenue around 1:32 a.m. following reports of a fight. As officers were en route, the situation escalated with subsequent 911 calls reporting a shooting. Upon their arrival, they discovered Jones, a resident of Winchester, who had been shot. Despite the efforts of first responders, he was pronounced deceased at the scene.
The investigation into the death of the male victim quickly pointed to an acquaintance, Jessie Nathaniel Simms, a 32-year-old man also from Winchester. The Winchester Police Department's Criminal Investigations Division, with assistance from the Medical Examiner's Office, began to piece together the events of that fatal morning. Their investigation indicated that the altercation was an isolated incident between Jones and Simms.
A search warrant was executed at Simms' residence, also located in the 1800 block of Henry Avenue, where authorities seized a handgun. Following the investigation, Jessie Nathaniel Simms was arrested and charged with second-degree murder in connection with the shooting death of Nathaniel Jones. He was subsequently transported to the Northwestern Regional Adult Detention Center, where he was held without bond.
