In the late hours of August 2, 2022, the life of 19-year-old Tavon Johnnie Harris Jr. was tragically cut short in Emporia, Virginia. Harris was discovered in the front yard of a residence on the 500 block of Park Avenue around midnight, suffering from a gunshot wound. Despite the immediate response and life-saving efforts of officers and the Greensville County Rescue Squad, he was pronounced dead at the Southern Virginia Regional Medical Center.
The Emporia Police Department swiftly initiated a homicide investigation into the death of the young man. Their efforts, in collaboration with the Greensville County Sheriff's Office, Brunswick County Sheriff's Office, and Virginia State Police, quickly led to the identification of three individuals believed to be connected to the shooting. Within days of the incident, the investigation resulted in arrests.
One of the suspects taken into custody was a 15-year-old male, who was placed at the Crater Youth Detention Facility in Petersburg. Another suspect was identified as 18-year-old Arkee Necho Porter Jr., a resident of Emporia. Multiple warrants were issued for his arrest on serious charges, including First Degree Murder, Attempted First Degree Murder, Use of a Firearm in the Commission of a Felony, and Reckless Handling of a Firearm. Porter was subsequently apprehended and is being held without bond at the Southside Regional Jail.
A third suspect, also a juvenile, was identified by authorities, though their identity has not been publicly disclosed. The investigation into the circumstances surrounding Tavon Johnnie Harris Jr.'s death remains ongoing as law enforcement continues to seek information from the public to bring a full measure of justice for the teenager whose life was violently ended.
