On August 3, 2023, at approximately 12:08 a.m., the Emporia Police Department responded to reports of gunfire in the 700 block of Parham Street in Emporia, Virginia. Upon arrival, officers discovered 27-year-old Deon Darius "Skeeno" Hayes suffering from a gunshot wound. Despite immediate first aid efforts by the officers and the Greensville County Volunteer Rescue Squad, Hayes was pronounced dead at the scene.
