Deputy Sheriff Joseph Welton of the Greensville County Sheriff's Office in Virginia was tragically killed on March 22, 1900, while attempting to arrest a suspect involved in a series of burglaries in the Emporia area. On that fateful day, Deputy Welton, along with Justice of the Peace John Saunders and a citizen, tracked the group of suspects to a cabin near Skippers, Virginia.
