In the late summer of 2022, the life of 19-year-old Aliyah Henderson was tragically cut short in what was determined to be an act of domestic violence. On the afternoon of August 23, 2022, deputies responded to a call of a shooting at a residence on Crescent Valley Drive in Stafford, a community near Fredericksburg, Virginia. Inside the home, they discovered Aliyah Henderson with a gunshot wound.
Despite the efforts of medics who arrived at the scene, she had succumbed to her injury.
The investigation quickly focused on 21-year-old Trevon Vanzant of Chesterfield, the father of Henderson's young child. Authorities determined that Vanzant had shot Henderson during a dispute. Present in the home at the time of the fatal shooting were the couple's one-year-old child and another of Henderson's family members, neither of whom were physically harmed. A handgun was recovered at the scene by investigators. Vanzant was subsequently arrested and faced several charges, including second-degree murder, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. He was held without bond at the Rappahannock Regional Jail.
In a turn of events that brought a conclusion to the legal proceedings but was met with dissatisfaction by the victim's family, Trevon Vanzant entered into a plea agreement. In April 2024, he was sentenced to 40 years in prison for the murder of Aliyah Henderson. The family, who had hoped for a trial, expressed that the sentence felt insufficient for the life that was taken. Henderson was remembered by her family as a bright, creative, and talented young mother who had aspirations of attending school for hair and makeup. In the wake of her death, her parents have taken on the responsibility of raising her son, ensuring he will know about the mother he lost.
