On a late November evening in Hampton, Virginia, the life of 18-year-old Shaun Fauntleroy, a Black male from Newport News, was tragically cut short. The events of November 18, 2022, unfolded around 10:48 p.m. when the Hampton Police Division received multiple calls reporting gunfire near the intersection of Nickerson Boulevard and Bridgeport Cove Drive.
Responding officers discovered a chaotic and heartbreaking scene.
At the initial location, police found a 14-year-old boy lying in the roadway with a gunshot wound; he was pronounced dead at the scene. Shortly after, another report of a shooting came in from the 30 block of Silver Isles Boulevard. It was there that officers found Shaun Fauntleroy, also suffering from a fatal gunshot wound. The investigation would soon reveal that these two tragic deaths were connected.
Detectives determined that Fauntleroy, the 14-year-old, and a third individual, a 16-year-old boy also from Newport News, were all inside the same vehicle when they were ambushed. Multiple people approached their car and opened fire, riddling it with bullets. In a desperate attempt to find help, the driver fled the initial scene, ultimately stopping in the Silver Isles area where Fauntleroy was found. The 16-year-old survived the attack with non-life-threatening injuries.
In the days following the shooting, Hampton Police Chief Mark Talbot described the incident as a senseless act of violence. While authorities looked into various potential motives, they stated there was no immediate evidence to suggest the shooting was gang-related or connected to a fight that had reportedly occurred at a high school football game earlier that evening. The investigation into the double homicide was launched, with police appealing to the community for any information that could lead to the identification and apprehension of those responsible for the deaths of Shaun Fauntleroy and the unnamed 14-year-old. As of late 2025, the investigation remains ongoing, and no arrests have been publicly announced in connection with the case.
