In the late hours of a November evening in 1950, a family tragedy unfolded in Franklin Township, New Jersey, forever marking the community of Vineland. John Pioppi, a male resident, was tragically killed during a violent rampage carried out by his brother-in-law, Ernest Ingenito. The devastating chain of events began when Ingenito, armed with multiple firearms, arrived at the home where his estranged wife, Theresa, was staying with her parents.
A dispute over seeing his children
escalated with terrifying speed. Ingenito first shot and killed his father-in-law, Michael Mazzoli, and wounded his wife. As the chaos erupted and family members sought safety, Ingenito pursued his mother-in-law, Pearl, to a neighboring family home. There, he continued his deadly assault, fatally shooting Theresa Pioppi, his wife's grandmother, in the doorway. He then stepped over her body and shot and killed his wife's pregnant aunt, Marian Pioppi.
It was in the midst of this horrific scene that John Pioppi confronted Ingenito, attempting to stop the bloodshed armed only with a knife. Tragically, in his courageous effort to protect his family, John was also shot and killed by Ingenito. The rampage did not end there, as Ingenito proceeded to another relative's home where he shot and wounded two more family members.
Law enforcement, specifically the New Jersey State Police, responded to the massacre and successfully apprehended Ernest Ingenito. During questioning, he confessed to the killings. Ingenito was subsequently tried and convicted for the murders. He spent the remainder of his life in prison, where he died of heart failure in 1995.
