On a late Tuesday morning in Newark, New Jersey, a burst of gunfire shattered the calm, leaving tragedy in its wake. It was January 21, 2014, when 28-year-old Shante Spivey, a Black female from East Orange, was caught in the deadly assault on Springfield Avenue in the city's West Ward. She was a passenger in a parked car with four other people outside a restaurant when an unidentified person approached and opened fire on the vehicle.
