In the late hours of a Friday night in Jersey City, New Jersey, 21-year-old Darius Dashawn Redmon was fatally wounded. While sitting in a car near the Booker T. Washington Housing Complex on May 2, 2014, he was struck in the head by a bullet. In the immediate aftermath, three companions rushed him to a police station. Officers at the station administered CPR before he was transported to a nearby hospital, but his life could not be saved. He was pronounced dead the following night.
The investigation into the shooting quickly pointed to a suspect. Daquan Mixson, 24 years old at the time, turned himself in to the Hudson County prosecutors on the Sunday following the incident. He was subsequently charged with murder, aggravated assault, and weapons offenses in connection with Redmon's death.
Authorities held Mixson on a $1 million bail.
