In the late summer of 2014, the life of 20-year-old Quantasia Bessix was tragically cut short in a senseless act of violence in her hometown of Bridgeton, New Jersey. A Black/African American female, Bessix was not the intended victim of the fatal shooting that occurred on the evening of August 11, 2014. She was on a porch on North Street when a vehicle drove by and shots were fired. Struck in the back as she tried to flee the gunfire, Bessix was gravely wounded.
Rushed from the scene to Cooper University Hospital in Camden, medical personnel fought to save her life. Despite their efforts, Quantasia Bessix succumbed to her injuries the following day, on August 12, 2014. The young mother, who was an employee at a local McDonald's, left behind a daughter named Jahasia.
Her sudden and violent death sent ripples of grief and shock through her family and the wider Bridgeton community, which was experiencing a notable spike in gun violence at the time.
The investigation into the shooting moved swiftly. Authorities identified 22-year-old Ralph Peter Jamison of Fairfield as the individual responsible for firing the shots. Evidence suggested that the gunfire was directed at the residence and that Bessix was an unintended casualty. Less than two weeks after the shooting, on August 22, 2014, Jamison was apprehended by a collaborative team of law enforcement officers, including local police and the U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task Force. The vehicle used in the drive-by had been recovered earlier, aiding investigators in their pursuit.
Ralph Peter Jamison faced a series of serious charges, including murder and various weapons offenses. The legal process culminated in his conviction for aggravated manslaughter. In 2015, a measure of justice was delivered to Quantasia Bessix's loved ones when Jamison was sentenced to serve 19 years in state prison for his role in her untimely death.
