In the quiet early morning hours of August 11, 2018, the life of 44-year-old Erica S. McNair, a Black female resident of Bridgeton, New Jersey, was tragically cut short in a sudden act of violence. She was sitting on the front porch of her home on Walnut Street, a place that should have been a sanctuary, when gunfire erupted shortly after 1:30 a.m. A bullet struck her in the head, inflicting a fatal wound.
Emergency services were quickly dispatched to the scene. McNair was initially rushed to Inspira Medical Center Vineland before being transferred to Cooper University Hospital in Camden. Despite the efforts of medical professionals, she succumbed to her injuries, leaving a community in mourning and a family devastated by their sudden loss.
