On a late summer evening in Newark, New Jersey, tragedy struck an 18-year-old male named Tyquil Whitehead. On Friday, September 5, 2014, at approximately 10:15 p.m., police responded to reports of a shooting in the 100 block of Riverside Avenue. Upon arrival, officers discovered Whitehead lying in the street, suffering from gunshot wounds. He was rushed to University Hospital, but his injuries proved fatal, and he was pronounced dead at 10:51 p.m.
The investigation into the shooting was
conducted by the Essex County Prosecutor's Major Crimes Task Force, which includes detectives from the Newark Police Department. In the course of their investigation, authorities identified a suspect in connection with Whitehead's death. Jalill N. Dennis, a 22-year-old from Irvington, was arrested and charged in the slaying of the Newark teen.
At the time of the incident, officials stated that the shooting did not appear to be related to another fatal shooting that occurred in Newark later that same night. The investigation into Tyquil Whitehead's death was declared ongoing at the time, with authorities asking for anyone with information to come forward.
