In the winter of 2015, a young Black man named Alikhan Garland, a 22-year-old resident of Newark, New Jersey, was fatally wounded in a shooting. The incident occurred on the morning of January 23rd, at approximately 9:19 a.m., in the 100 block of 19th Avenue in the neighboring town of Irvington.
