Anthony Jones, a 43-year-old Black man, found himself in the wrong place at the wrong time on the evening of January 27, 2015. He had recently moved his family from their home on Pearl Street in Trenton, New Jersey, hoping to escape the escalating violence and open-air drug activity that plagued the neighborhood. Despite the move, he returned to the 200 block of Pearl Street that Tuesday evening to check the mail and gather some remaining belongings.
It was a decision that would prove fatal.
While on his former street, Jones was confronted by a group of men and shot multiple times. Police responded to reports of gunfire around 6:40 p.m. and discovered his body lying in the middle of the street. He was rushed to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced dead a short time later, marking the city's first homicide of the year.
In the immediate aftermath of the shooting, Jones's family was adamant that they knew who was responsible. They recounted a story of an altercation that had occurred the previous summer between Jones and another man. The dispute, which began as a verbal disagreement, turned physical, with Jones reportedly getting the better of the other individual. Following the fight, the man allegedly made threats on Jones's life. His family believes that the fatal confrontation was a direct result of this prior incident.
Despite the family's beliefs and their cooperation with law enforcement, no arrests were immediately made in connection with Anthony Jones's murder. The Mercer County Homicide Task Force took charge of the investigation, but an air of uncertainty hung over the case. The identity of the suspect or suspects remained publicly undisclosed, leaving a void in the quest for justice for a man who had been described as a devoted father trying to build a safer life for his children.
