In the early morning hours of a December Sunday in Trenton, New Jersey, the life of Ronald Parker, a 45-year-old Black man, came to a violent end. On December 17, 2017, Parker was found behind the wheel of a crashed Acura, having suffered multiple gunshot wounds, including one to the chest. He was pronounced dead at the scene at 4:05 a.m. The car he was driving had collided with a fence near the intersection of Asbury and Steamboat streets in the South Trenton area.
Parker, a father of five and grandfather of six, had a history that included struggles with the law, having spent about a decade in prison on a drug conviction and for a parole violation. However, his wife, Adrian Clayborn-Parker, believed he had left that life behind and was focused on his family.
She noted that he had remained in Trenton to care for his ailing father while she and their family had relocated to Atlanta.
In the hours leading up to his death, Parker's wife mentioned that he had received a phone call from a woman and had given her a ride. This detail was a point of suspicion for his wife, though she did not believe his death was related to his past involvement with drugs.
Despite the ongoing investigation into what was marked as the city's 22nd homicide of the year, authorities did not immediately identify any suspects or make any arrests in connection with the murder of Ronald Parker. The case, like many instances of gun violence in the capital city, left a family grieving and a community searching for answers that were not readily available in the immediate aftermath of the shooting.
