On a January weekend in 2016, 24-year-old Jovan Marino, a Black male from Trenton, New Jersey, was shot on Rosemont Avenue in the city’s West Ward, a stretch of homes that would suddenly become the focus of flashing lights and police tape late on a Friday night. Around 11:15 p.m. on January 8, officers were called to the 100 block of Rosemont Avenue, where gunfire had cut through the quiet and left Jovan gravely wounded in the street.
