On the night of May 26, 2015, the life of 24-year-old John Carlos Betances, a male resident of Newark, New Jersey, was cut tragically short. At approximately 10:36 p.m., the sound of gunfire echoed through the 700 block of South 18th Street. When authorities arrived at the scene, they discovered Betances suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. He was rushed to University Hospital, but his injuries proved to be fatal, and he was pronounced dead shortly after 11 p.m. In the immediate aftermath of the shooting, no suspects were identified, and the investigation into his death was launched by local law enforcement.
The case took a significant turn in the weeks that followed. On July 7, 2015, two men were arrested and charged in connection with the murder of John Carlos Betances. Raheem Glaspie, 23, of Irvington, and Shaquan Leaks, 22, of Hillside, were taken into custody.
Their arrests were part of a much larger law enforcement operation targeting a drug ring allegedly run by members of the 793 Bloods gang. This broader crackdown resulted in charges against 48 individuals, with 37 being apprehended.
Glaspie and Leaks were arraigned before Superior Court Judge Ronald Wigler, where they both pleaded not guilty to the murder charges. Bail for each man was set at a formidable $1 million. The prosecution's case against the two men was reportedly strengthened by the existence of surveillance footage that allegedly captured the fatal shooting. Despite their pleas of innocence, the evidence presented was substantial enough for the judge to deny any reduction in their bail. The matter was then referred to a grand jury for further proceedings, intertwining the tragic death of Betances with the complex issues of gang violence and drug trafficking in the Newark area.
