In the early morning hours of October 9, 2015, the life of 33-year-old Angelo P. Lorenz was tragically cut short in a senseless act of violence outside a lounge on South Orange Avenue in Newark, New Jersey. The male victim was fatally shot without any apparent provocation, a shocking event that stunned the local community. The motive behind the sudden and brutal attack remained unclear, leaving behind questions and grief in the wake of his untimely death.
The investigation into the shooting led to the arrest of Rayquan Tubbs, a 20-year-old from the nearby town of Irvington. Authorities charged Tubbs with first-degree aggravated manslaughter and second-degree possession of a handgun. At the time of the incident, Tubbs was already on probation for a prior burglary conviction. Faced with the evidence against him, he ultimately entered a guilty plea to the charges, admitting to the shooting of Angelo Lorenz.
As a result of his plea agreement, a 25-year prison sentence was recommended by the state.
Also present during the fatal encounter was Rayquan Tubbs' brother, Khalil Thomas. While he did not participate in the shooting itself, he also faced legal repercussions. Thomas pleaded guilty to one count of second-degree possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose. His plea resulted in a seven-year prison sentence, with a requirement to serve 42 months before becoming eligible for parole. The prosecution of both brothers was handled by the Essex County Prosecutor's Office, bringing a measure of legal closure to the tragic and violent death of Angelo P. Lorenz.
