In the early morning hours of a Sunday in November 2015, the ShotSpotter system alerted Camden County Police to gunfire on the 1400 block of Pershing Street. Responding to the alert at approximately 3:12 a.m., officers arrived to find a man lying on the sidewalk, the victim of a shooting. The man was identified as 44-year-old Andre Matthews, a resident of Camden.
Emergency services transported Matthews to Cooper University Hospital.
Despite medical efforts, he was pronounced dead at 4:32 a.m. The incident was ruled a homicide, and an investigation was launched by the Camden County Prosecutor's Office and the Camden County Police Department.
In the days following the shooting, authorities had not publicly identified any suspects or made any arrests in connection with the death of Andre Matthews. The investigation into the circumstances surrounding the fatal shooting was reported to be ongoing. Information regarding a motive for the shooting was not released in the initial reports. As of late 2015, no further updates on arrests or the identification of any suspects were publicly available.
