In the late hours of a Wednesday evening, the city of Newark was rattled by a burst of violence that claimed the life of Karod H. Tucker, a 36-year-old male from the neighboring township of Irvington. On January 27, 2016, at approximately 9:42 p.m., the piercing sound of gunfire shattered the night on the 900 block of Franklin Avenue, in the vicinity of the Stephen Crane Village housing complex. Responding to the call, Newark Police arrived at a grim scene.
There, they discovered Karod H. Tucker suffering from what appeared to be multiple gunshot wounds. Emergency services rushed him to University Hospital in a desperate attempt to save his life. Despite the efforts of medical staff, Tucker succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at 10:30 p.m.
that same night.
The Essex County Prosecutor's Office Homicide/Major Crimes Task Force, in conjunction with the Newark Police Department, immediately launched an investigation into the fatal shooting. In the initial days following the incident, authorities announced that the investigation was active and ongoing. However, at that time, no arrests had been made in connection with the shooting, and no suspects had been publicly identified. The circumstances that led to the shooting remained unclear as detectives continued their work to piece together the events of that tragic night.
