On the evening of May 3, 2023, a report of gunshots in the 200 block of 4th Street brought Newark police to the North Ward. Upon arrival, they were unable to locate a specific crime scene, but soon learned of a motor vehicle accident nearby at the intersection of First Street and Sussex Avenue. Inside the vehicle, officers discovered 20-year-old Jayden Jarvis of East Orange, a male, suffering from apparent gunshot wounds.
Emergency services transported Jarvis to University Hospital, but his injuries proved fatal, and he was pronounced dead at 11:16 p.m. The Essex County Prosecutor's Office Homicide/Major Crimes Task Force is leading the investigation into the fatal shooting. Jarvis, a graduate of Barringer High School, was remembered as a talented football player who was full of life with a promising future.
Those who knew him recalled his infectious, positive energy and his love for making people laugh.
As of early May 2023, the investigation into Jayden Jarvis's death was active and ongoing. Authorities had not made any arrests in connection with the shooting, and no suspects had been publicly identified.
