On the evening of May 3, 2023, a report of gunshots in the 200 block of 4th Street brought Newark police to the North Ward. Upon arrival, they were unable to locate a specific crime scene, but soon learned of a motor vehicle accident nearby at the intersection of First Street and Sussex Avenue. Inside the vehicle, officers discovered 20-year-old Jayden Jarvis of East Orange, a male, suffering from apparent gunshot wounds.
