In the South Ward of Newark, on an autumn evening, the sound of gunfire shattered the relative quiet of the Grumman and Maple Avenue area. When police responded to the reports of shots fired on October 21, 2021, they discovered a grim scene. Inside a car, 41-year-old Louis Brown, a Black male from the nearby town of Watchung, was found suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.
Despite the swift arrival of emergency responders, there was nothing that could be done to save him. Brown was pronounced dead at the scene at 4:56 p.m. The Essex County Prosecutor's Office Homicide/Major Crimes Task Force, in conjunction with detectives from the Newark Police Department, immediately launched an investigation into the fatal shooting.
