Jermaine Mooky Johnson, a 26-year-old Black male, was fatally shot in Trenton, New Jersey, on the afternoon of April 29, 2016. The incident occurred in broad daylight while Johnson was sitting inside a Nissan Murano parked in a driveway on Hillcrest Avenue. He was shot at least five times and was transported to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The investigation into Johnson's death led to the swift arrest of a suspect.
On May 1, 2016, Jamar McCoy, then 32, of Ewing, was taken into custody and charged with murder and related weapons offenses. In addition to the murder charge, McCoy was also accused of pistol-whipping Johnson's brother following the shooting. Prosecutors stated that witnesses identified McCoy as the shooter and that surveillance footage captured him fleeing the scene.
In March 2019, a jury found Jamar McCoy guilty of murder and weapons offenses in connection with Johnson's death. He was later sentenced to 47 years in prison for the crime. The trial concluded a nearly three-year legal process, bringing a measure of justice to Johnson's family.
