In the Wilbur neighborhood of Trenton, New Jersey, a sense of inspiration that had been fostered by community art projects was tragically disrupted on the evening of January 20, 2016. On that Wednesday, at approximately 8:30 p.m., the sound of multiple gunshots echoed through the 100 block of Walnut Avenue. When police arrived, they found 21-year-old Tyquise Timmons, a Black male, lying on the porch of a residence.
He had sustained a gunshot wound and was pronounced dead at the scene, just a few blocks from his own home on Monmouth Street. Witnesses reported hearing as many as eight gunshots, and numerous evidence markers were later seen on the street and sidewalk.
The investigation into the death of Timmons became the city's third homicide case of the year. Authorities from the Mercer County Homicide Task Force took charge of the case, urging anyone with information to come forward. In the days that followed, a man from Ewing was arrested on a firearm possession charge moments after driving away from Timmons' funeral, which had a noticeable police presence. This heightened security was due to a shooting incident that had occurred at the funeral of another individual earlier that same month.
Despite the ongoing investigation and the pleas for public assistance, no arrests have been made directly in connection with the murder of Tyquise Timmons. The case remains an unsolved homicide, a painful reminder of the gun violence that has affected the Trenton community. Law enforcement officials have not publicly identified any suspects in his shooting. The lack of resolution in bringing his killer to justice leaves a lingering sorrow for his family and friends.
