In a tragic turn of events, 17-year-old Opium 'Dante' Leverette lost his life on September 22, 2024, in Trenton, New Jersey. The incident unfolded in the afternoon, around 12:32 p.m., when police responded to a ShotSpotter activation in the vicinity of Parkside and Homan avenues. Upon their arrival, officers discovered Leverette with a gunshot wound to his back.
He was quickly transported to Capital Health Regional Medical Center, but tragically succumbed to his injuries a short time later.
Leverette, also known as Tae Breezo, was remembered as a charismatic and spirited individual who had a passion for football from a young age, having played for both Trenton Pop Warner and the West End Baseball League. A minor heart condition prevented him from pursuing the sport in high school, but he held onto the dream of one day playing in the NFL to support his family. As he grew older, his interests expanded to include rapping, fashion, and the arts. He was known for his charm and leadership qualities, leaving a lasting impression on those he met.
The investigation into Leverette's death led to the arrest of 19-year-old Keisan Simmons of Trenton. Simmons was apprehended in Morrisville, Pennsylvania, by the U.S. Marshals New York/New Jersey Regional Fugitive Task Force. He is facing charges of first-degree murder, second-degree possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, and second-degree unlawful possession of a weapon. Following his arrest, Simmons was held at the Bucks County Correctional Facility awaiting legal proceedings.
