On a Saturday afternoon in Trenton, New Jersey, the life of 15-year-old Maurice Wimbush-Jalaah was tragically cut short. On June 11, 2016, at approximately 3:45 p.m., the male teen was shot in the Prospect Village, a Trenton Housing Authority complex. Responding police officers found Wimbush-Jalaah on the ground, and he was quickly transported to Capital Health Regional Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.
The investigation into the daylight killing led to the swift apprehension of three other teenagers. Wilson George, then 19, Jashawn Smith, 18, and Juprie Wadley, 19, all from Trenton, were identified as the suspects. While Smith and Wadley were detained fleeing the scene and initially charged with weapons offenses, George was released as he was not in possession of a gun at the time.
However, a gun was later found on Louise Lane, and George was subsequently charged with weapons offenses for allegedly discarding it.
Six months after the fatal shooting, all three teenagers were charged with murder and complicity offenses in connection with Wimbush-Jalaah's death. Investigators believed the shooting was the result of an ongoing dispute between individuals from the Prospect Village and North 25 Housing complexes. The case against the trio was described by prosecutors as an 'extremely strong circumstantial case,' built upon the recovery of three handguns, bullets, and shell casings that linked them to the murder. In 2018, the three men pleaded guilty to first-degree aggravated manslaughter and were each sentenced to 15 years in state prison.
