A 23-year-old man, Devon Lamar Green, known to many as 'Savy G,' was a budding rapper from Ewing Township, New Jersey, with a promising future ahead of him. A graduate of Ewing High School, he had co-founded the rap group 'Habitat for Life Crew,' which had performed at various venues and had even opened for the renowned rap artist Jadakiss. His life, however, was violently cut short in what started as a robbery.
In the early morning hours of October 19, 2017, Green was in the carport of
his residence on Lanning Street when he was confronted by a group of individuals intent on robbing him. The situation quickly turned tragic as one of the men, Kyree Hill, armed with a rifle-style long gun, opened fire, shooting Green multiple times. The young artist was pronounced dead at the scene, his life tragically ending at the hands of his assailants.
The investigation that followed the shooting led to the arrests of four individuals in connection with the robbery and homicide. The man identified as the shooter, Kyree Hill, was apprehended along with Coson Taylor, Damonte Smith, and Voshon McCray, who was determined to have acted as the lookout. The resolution of the case involved a series of legal proceedings, including a mistrial for Hill and Smith in May 2019, which led to a retrial.
Ultimately, all four men faced consequences for their roles in Devon Green's death. Kyree Hill pleaded guilty to a lesser charge of first-degree aggravated manslaughter and was sentenced to 10 years in prison, with the requirement to serve 85 percent of his term before being eligible for parole. Coson Taylor was found guilty of first-degree armed robbery, among other charges, and received a 15-year prison sentence. Damonte Smith pleaded guilty to first-degree armed robbery and was sentenced to seven years of incarceration. Voshon McCray also pleaded guilty to first-degree armed robbery, accepting a plea deal for his involvement.
