In the late hours of a spring evening in Passaic, New Jersey, a burst of gunfire shattered the night, leaving a young man's life tragically cut short. Hansel Castillo, a 23-year-old male, was gunned down in a drive-by shooting on Federal Street at approximately 11:21 p.m. on Monday, May 15, 2017. He was rushed to St. Joseph's Regional Medical Center in Paterson but succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead on Tuesday, May 16th, 2017. Another man, a 20-year-old from Woodland Park, was also wounded in the attack but survived after being treated for non-life-threatening injuries.
The investigation that followed the violent incident led authorities to two suspects. Nelson J. Vargas, 24, of Lodi, and Christopher Reynoso, then 22, of Passaic, were arrested and charged in connection with the fatal shooting.
The Passaic County Prosecutor's Office announced that Vargas and Reynoso faced a string of serious charges, including first-degree murder, attempted murder, and conspiracy to commit murder, along with several weapons offenses. Investigators were looking into whether Castillo and the other victim were the intended targets of the shooting.
After legal proceedings that were delayed in part by the COVID-19 pandemic, a jury found both Nelson Vargas and Christopher Reynoso guilty of murder, attempted murder, conspiracy, and weapons offenses in June 2022. The conviction brought a measure of closure to a case that had lingered for years, finally delivering a verdict for the senseless act of violence that ended Hansel Castillo's life. Both men were to be sentenced at a later date and were to remain in custody until their assignment to a state prison.
