On a summer evening in Newark, New Jersey, the life of 26-year-old Nigel Farrell was cut short by gunfire. On July 1, 2017, just before 6:30 p.m., a shooting erupted in the area of 12 Pennsylvania Avenue, leaving a scene of chaos and violence. When the shots ceased, four people had been struck.
Farrell, a male resident of East Orange, was one of the victims. He was rushed to University Hospital for treatment of critical injuries, but tragically, he did not survive.
Another man, 20-year-old Darnell Holmes of Newark, was pronounced dead at the scene. Two other men from East Orange, ages 25 and 28, were also wounded in the incident but were fortunate to survive their injuries after receiving medical treatment.
In the wake of the violence, the Essex County Prosecutor's Office, in conjunction with the Newark Police Department, launched a homicide investigation into the double slaying. Officials announced that the investigation was active and ongoing as they worked to piece together the events that led to the deadly shooting. Despite the passage of time, public reports on the investigation have not named any suspects or announced any arrests in connection with the deaths of Nigel Farrell and Darnell Holmes. The motive behind the shooting has also not been publicly disclosed by law enforcement, leaving the community and the families of the victims to grapple with the unanswered questions surrounding the tragic loss of two young lives.
