In the late morning hours of a summer day in Camden, New Jersey, the life of David Wells III, a 29-year-old Black man, was tragically cut short. On July 21, 2017, at approximately 10:52 a.m., authorities received 911 calls reporting a man had been shot on the 300 block of Fountain Street in the East Camden neighborhood. Upon their arrival, police discovered Wells suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.
Emergency responders rushed David Wells III to Cooper University Hospital, but his
injuries proved to be too severe. A little over twenty minutes after the shooting, at 11:11 a.m., he was pronounced dead. The incident marked the city's fifth homicide in the month of July and the fourteenth for that year.
The Camden County Prosecutor's Office and the Camden County Police Department immediately launched an investigation into the brazen daylight shooting. They publicly appealed for anyone with information to come forward to assist in their efforts to find those responsible for Wells' death. However, as of the day following the shooting, no arrests had been made. The investigation into the shooting remains ongoing, and authorities have not publicly identified any suspects in connection with the case.
