In the early hours of a Sunday morning in the Ironbound section of Newark, New Jersey, a dispute escalated to a fatal encounter that claimed the lives of two brothers. Francisco Castillo-Granados, a 22-year-old male, and his older brother, Jose Castillo-Granados, who was 25, were shot on August 27, 2017. The brothers, originally from Honduras, were rushed to a nearby hospital but succumbed to their injuries shortly after arrival.
The shooting, which took place near the intersection of
Adams and Walnut streets, was described by the Essex County Prosecutor's Office as an isolated incident. Authorities believed the brothers knew their assailant. The investigation by the Essex County Prosecutor's Office Homicide/Major Crimes Task Force, which included Newark detectives, led to the arrest of a suspect.
Zabdiel R. Vargas-Soto, a 22-year-old resident of Newark, was taken into custody in connection with the killings. He was charged with two counts of murder, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, and unlawful possession of a weapon. Following his arrest, Vargas-Soto was held at the Essex County Correctional Facility in Newark. The community mourned the loss of the two young brothers as the legal proceedings against the accused began.
