In the early morning hours of September 23, 2017, the life of 39-year-old Farad Green, a male resident of Newark, New Jersey, was cut short by gunfire. Police responded to reports of shots fired in the 400 block of Hawthorne Avenue in the city's South Ward shortly before 12:30 a.m. Upon searching the area, they discovered Green unconscious and unresponsive inside a local eatery.
Medics were called to the scene, but it was too late; he was pronounced dead from gunshot wounds.
The Essex County Prosecutor's Office immediately launched an investigation into the fatal shooting, treating it as a homicide. Despite their efforts to uncover the motive behind the killing and identify those responsible, no arrests have been made in connection with Farad Green's death. Investigators have considered various angles, including the possibility that his murder was an act of retaliation connected to his own past. The case officially remains open, and law enforcement has urged anyone with information to come forward to assist in bringing his killer or killers to justice.
This was not Farad Green's first encounter with the law. In 2011, at the age of 33, he was arrested and charged with the murder of 26-year-old Latisha Brown of East Orange. Brown was fatally shot on Peshine Avenue in Newark. Green's arrest at that time was the result of a collaborative effort between multiple law enforcement agencies, including the Essex County Prosecutor's Homicide/Major Crimes Task Force and the U.S. Marshal's Fugitive Task Force, and was aided by anonymous tips. He was ultimately apprehended in Iselin.
