In the early morning hours of Friday, September 26, 2025, the city of Newark was rattled by a series of violent events. In the West Ward, a ShotSpotter alert drew Newark Police to the vicinity of Halsted Street and Norwood Place at approximately 2:36 a.m. There, in front of a residence on Smith Street, officers discovered a grim scene. Inside a Honda Fit, a young man had been shot in the head.
The victim was identified as 23-year-old Jeramahia Bascal of Newark, a male whose life was
abruptly cut short. Emergency responders rushed him to University Hospital, but his injuries were too severe. Shortly after 5:00 a.m., Jeramahia Bascal was pronounced dead. His death was one of three separate shootings that occurred in the city within a 24-hour period, leaving one person dead and another critically injured, casting a shadow of fear and concern over the community.
In the wake of the shooting, the Essex County Prosecutor's Office confirmed that an investigation into the death of Jeramahia Bascal was underway. Authorities stated that the inquiry remains active and ongoing. However, in the days and months that followed the incident, no public announcements were made regarding any arrests or the identification of any suspects in connection with his death.
