In the spring of 2019, the city of Newark, New Jersey, lost a beloved member of its community. Tyshawn Christian, a 25-year-old Black man, was a well-known local figure, not only for his talent as a rapper who went by the stage name Tik Millie, but also as a standout pitcher for the Newark Astros, an amateur baseball team. His life, however, was tragically cut short on the evening of May 5, 2019.
On that Sunday evening, in the West Ward of Newark, gunshots rang out near Smith Street.
Tyshawn was struck by the gunfire in what authorities believe was not a targeted attack on him, but rather that he was an unintended victim of shots fired into a crowd. He was rushed to University Hospital, but his injuries proved to be fatal, and he was pronounced dead shortly after 11 p.m. His death sent ripples of grief and shock through his community, where he was remembered as a positive influence and a talented individual with a promising future.
The investigation into Tyshawn Christian's murder was swiftly launched, led by the Essex County Prosecutor's Office Homicide/Major Crimes Task Force in collaboration with the Newark Police Department. Despite their efforts and public appeals for information, the case has remained unsolved. To date, no arrests have been made in connection with his death, and no suspects have been publicly identified.
The loss was deeply felt by those who knew him. His coach and teammates from the Newark Astros remembered him not just for his athletic prowess on the baseball field, but for his character and the camaraderie he inspired. Friends and family mourned a young man who was seen as a role model, someone who was dedicated to his music and his sport.
