In the late hours of Halloween night in 2017, a tragedy unfolded in Elizabeth, New Jersey, forever altering the lives of two families. Rah-Zhane Lee, a 22-year-old Black female, was walking through a park with her best friend, 24-year-old Shaniquah Richardson, shortly after midnight on November 1st. The two women were reportedly using the park as a shortcut when they were ambushed in a sudden burst of violence.
Witnesses in the area reported hearing the sound of multiple gunshots piercing the night.
Responding to the reports of shots fired in the area of 2nd and Court streets, Elizabeth Police Department patrol units discovered both Lee and Richardson suffering from gunshot wounds. The two friends were rushed to Trinitas Regional Medical Center, but their injuries proved to be too severe, and they were both pronounced dead a short time later. The sudden and violent loss of the two young women sent a shockwave of grief and fear through the local community.
In the aftermath of the double homicide, the Union County Prosecutor's Office, the Elizabeth Police Department, and the Union County Sheriff's Office Crime Scene Unit launched a joint investigation. Authorities have urged the public to come forward with any information that might lead to a breakthrough in the case. As part of their investigation, they released surveillance footage showing a dark-colored sedan speeding away from the scene of the crime. This vehicle is believed to be connected to the murders.
Despite the release of the video and a reward of up to $10,000 for information leading to an arrest and indictment, the case has grown cold. Investigators have re-released the surveillance footage on multiple occasions in the years since the shooting, hoping to spark a memory or encourage a witness to come forward. To date, no arrests have been made, and no suspects have been publicly identified in the murders of Rah-Zhane Lee and Shaniquah Richardson.
