Shaniquah Richardson, a 24-year-old female, and her close friend, 22-year-old Rah-Zhane Lee, were walking through a park when they were ambushed in a sudden burst of gunfire. The incident occurred shortly after midnight on November 1, 2017, near the area of 2nd and Court streets in the city's Elizabethport section.
Responding to reports of shots fired, Elizabeth Police Department patrol units discovered both women at the scene with gunshot injuries. They were quickly transported to Trinitas Regional Medical Center, but their wounds proved to be fatal, and both were pronounced dead a short time later. The sudden and violent nature of their deaths sent ripples of grief and shock through their community and families.
Shaniquah was a mother, leaving behind a young daughter, Tiana Sosa.
In the aftermath of the shooting, a joint investigation was launched by the Union County Homicide Task Force, the Elizabeth Police Department, and the Union County Sheriff's Office Crime Scene Unit. As part of their appeal for information, authorities released surveillance footage that captured a dark-colored sedan speeding away from the area around the time of the shooting. A substantial reward of up to $10,000 was offered by the Union County Crime Stoppers for any information that would lead to an arrest and indictment in the case.
