In a tragic act of violence on an April evening in Newark, New Jersey, 21-year-old Quamir Harmon's life was cut short. On April 25, 2018, Quamir, a Black male, and his younger brother, 20-year-old Quan Harmon, were shot in the 900 block of Bergen Street. The incident occurred at approximately 9:26 p.m., after which both brothers were rushed to University Hospital for medical attention.
Despite the efforts of emergency responders, Quan Harmon was pronounced dead at 10:12 p.m.
that same night. Quamir Harmon fought for his life for several more hours but ultimately succumbed to his injuries. He was pronounced dead at 12:25 a.m. on April 26, 2018. The loss of both brothers sent shockwaves through their community and left their family to grapple with an immense and sudden grief. Quamir was remembered as a pure-hearted young man who was deeply passionate about his family and very protective of his mother.
The investigation into the double homicide was swiftly undertaken by the Essex County Prosecutor's Office Homicide/Major Crimes Task Force, which includes detectives from the Newark Police Department. Their collaborative efforts soon identified a suspect in the fatal shootings. An arrest warrant was issued for 22-year-old Marquise Jones of Newark. The charges against him included two counts of murder, attempted murder, unlawful possession of a handgun, and possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose.
The pursuit of the suspect extended across the country. On May 5, 2018, Marquise Jones was located and apprehended in San Jose, California. He was taken into custody without incident by the San Jose Police Department. Following his arrest, Jones was held in the Santa Clara County Jail, awaiting extradition back to New Jersey to face the charges related to the deaths of Quamir and Quan Harmon. The charges against Jones are accusations, and he is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
