In the early morning hours of August 21, 2018, a burst of gunfire shattered the quiet of a Newark, New Jersey street, tragically ending the life of 26-year-old Michelle Newkirk. A resident of Newark, she was a passenger in the back of a vehicle driving on Norwood Street at approximately 2:11 a.m. when the shots were fired. Struck by the gunfire, Newkirk was rushed to University Hospital.
Despite initial reports suggesting her injuries were not life-threatening, her condition took a turn
for the worse, and she succumbed to her wounds later that morning. The Essex County Prosecutor's Office Homicide/Major Crimes Task Force immediately launched an investigation into her death, canvassing the area and appealing to the public for any information that might lead to the person or persons responsible for the fatal shooting.
In the weeks and months that followed, the investigation continued, but no suspects were publicly identified, and no arrests were made in connection with the homicide. To encourage potential witnesses to come forward, the Essex County Sheriff's Crime Stoppers Program offered a reward of up to $5,000 for information that would lead to the arrest and conviction of those responsible for Michelle Newkirk's death. Her case remains a painful memory for her family and the community, a life cut short by a senseless act of violence that has yet to be fully resolved.
