In the winter of 2019 in Newark, New Jersey, the life of 16-year-old Jayla Green was tragically cut short. A Black/African American female, Jayla was a high school student known for her love of music, fashion, and cheerleading. On the evening of Saturday, January 26, 2019, she attended a candlelight vigil near Bergen Street and Madison Avenue. The vigil was held in memory of two teenage boys who had recently died in a car crash involving a stolen vehicle.
What was intended to be a solemn
gathering to mourn a loss within the community turned into a scene of further tragedy. At approximately 9:15 p.m., gunfire erupted in the crowd. In the chaos that ensued, four young women, ranging in age from 16 to 20, were struck by bullets. Jayla Green was shot in the head. The other three victims sustained leg injuries but were expected to survive.
Immediately following the shooting, Jayla was rushed to University Hospital. She was placed on life support and remained in critical condition for several days. Despite medical efforts, she succumbed to her injuries and passed away on February 3, 2019. Her death was described as a cowardly act of hatred by Newark's mayor and sent ripples of grief and outrage through the community.
In the aftermath of the shooting, law enforcement officials began an investigation into the incident. A significant reward of up to $50,000 was offered for any information that would lead to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for the shooting. Authorities have urged the public to come forward with any details that might aid in solving the case. However, despite these efforts and the public's plea for justice, no arrests have been made in connection with the death of Jayla Green, and no suspects have been publicly identified.
