D'Andre King-Settles, a 17-year-old Black male, tragically lost his life on December 18, 2015. On that Friday afternoon, at approximately 4 p.m., D'Andre was walking with two friends after leaving a building on Annunciation Road in the Mission Hill neighborhood of Boston. The group was near a playground adjacent to the Alice Taylor apartment complex where D'Andre lived with his family. Suddenly, shots were fired from behind them. D'Andre was struck by multiple bullets and collapsed.
He succumbed to his injuries at the scene, which was not far from the Boston Police Department headquarters. One of his friends, a 19-year-old, was grazed by a bullet but was not seriously injured.
The investigation into the shooting led Boston Police to two suspects. The first arrest was made in late February 2016. Tsunami Ortiz, who was 17 at the time, was taken into custody and charged with murder and other offenses. Investigators utilized surveillance video footage of sufficient quality to identify Ortiz. Cell phone tower data also placed him in the area at the time of the fatal shooting. A second suspect, 18-year-old Enrique Auch of Revere, was arrested in early April 2016. The prosecution's theory was that the two acted together in a joint venture to carry out the shooting.
In October 2017, a Suffolk Superior Court jury convicted both Tsunami Ortiz, then 18, and Enrique Auch, then 20, of second-degree murder for the death of D'Andre King-Settles. The conviction carries an automatic life sentence with the possibility of parole. For D'Andre's family, the tragedy was compounded by previous loss; his older brother, Richard T. King Jr., had been stabbed to death in 2011 at the age of 22. D'Andre was survived by his mother, a brother, and a sister.
