In the late morning of November 27, 2018, events tragically unfolded for 39-year-old Elijah Jackson, a resident of the Sicklerville section of Winslow Township. He was discovered unconscious on the ground at the intersection of 7th and State Streets in Camden, New Jersey, suffering from a gunshot wound. Camden County Police had responded to the scene following reports of an unconscious man just after 10:30 a.m.
Rushed to Cooper University Hospital, medical efforts to save his life were unsuccessful, and he was pronounced dead at approximately 11:14 a.m. The investigation that followed pointed to Jacob Rodriguez, a 24-year-old from Camden, as the alleged shooter.
Detectives determined that Rodriguez had been in the area and had reportedly fired at Jackson.
On December 10, 2018, Jacob Rodriguez was taken into custody in Camden by the United States Marshals on unrelated charges. The following day, he was officially charged with the first-degree murder of Elijah Jackson. After the charges were filed at the Camden County Prosecutor's Office, Rodriguez was transported to the Camden County Correctional Facility to await a pretrial detention hearing.
