In the evening hours of November 28, 2017, a burst of gunfire on the 1100 block of Atlantic Avenue in Camden, New Jersey, abruptly ended the life of 30-year-old Stanford Brown of Lawnside. The male victim was caught in a violent altercation that would leave him fatally wounded and another man injured. Camden County police were alerted to the shooting at approximately 7:20 p.m. by a ShotSpotter activation and a series of 911 calls from concerned citizens.
Upon their arrival, they discovered two men suffering from gunshot wounds. Both were rushed to Cooper University Hospital, where Brown was pronounced dead at roughly 7:35 p.m. The second victim, a 28-year-old from Camden, was treated for his injuries and subsequently released.
The investigation into the shooting swiftly identified two suspects. Darnell Konteh, 25, of Camden, was charged with the murder of Stanford Brown, while Anthony Pinson, 25, of Franklin Park, faced a charge of attempted murder for the shooting of the second man. Authorities alleged that Konteh shot Brown in the face and back with a shotgun. Investigators believe both Konteh and Pinson fled the scene in a dark-colored vehicle immediately after the shootings.
The day after the fatal incident, both suspects were apprehended by law enforcement during a traffic stop in New Brunswick. Inside their vehicle, officers discovered a shotgun and a. 45 caliber handgun, which were consistent with the ballistics evidence recovered from the crime scene. The arrests were the culmination of a collaborative effort between local, county, and federal law enforcement agencies. Surveillance footage that captured muzzle flashes and figures in the street, with one person falling, played a crucial role in building the case against the two men. The investigation suggested that the murder was connected to broader gang-related criminal activities. Darnell Konteh was subsequently held at the Camden County Correctional Facility, while Anthony Pinson was remanded to the Middlesex County Jail.
