In the winter of 2019, a burst of gunfire shattered the afternoon calm at a Camden, New Jersey intersection, leaving a man fatally wounded. On Wednesday, January 16th, at approximately 2:48 p.m., police responded to reports of a shooting at the corner of Morton and Norris Streets. Arriving officers discovered 39-year-old Mutota Amon on the ground, unconscious and suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. He was rushed to Cooper University Hospital, but his injuries proved too severe, and he succumbed to them a short time later.
The investigation into the brazen daylight shooting progressed quickly. Initially, the Camden County Prosecutor's Office and the Camden County Police Department sought public assistance in identifying a person of interest, circulating images related to the case. This appeal for information proved fruitful, and just days after Amon's death, an arrest was made.
On Sunday, January 20th, authorities took a suspect into custody without incident at the prosecutor's office.
The individual arrested and charged in connection with Mutota Amon's death was identified as 27-year-old Rashaad Allen, a resident of Camden. He was charged with first-degree murder for his alleged role in the fatal shooting. Following his arrest, Allen was processed and transported to the Camden County Correctional Facility to await a pretrial detention hearing.
