In the early morning hours of a spring Saturday in Camden, New Jersey, the promising life of 18-year-old JaMeer Bullard was tragically cut short. A talented and well-liked high school football star, Bullard was discovered lying on the sidewalk of the 1200 block of Mechanic Street with a gunshot wound. The city's gunshot detection system had alerted police to the sound of gunfire at approximately 12:25 a.m., leading them to the scene just a block from the new home his family had recently moved
into. Rushed to Cooper University Hospital, the young man was pronounced dead shortly after 1 a.m.
JaMeer was a gifted athlete, known for his intense drive on the football field and his amiable personality in the locker room. He had played for three years at Woodrow Wilson High School before transferring to Camden High School. His talent had not gone unnoticed, as he was considered a Division I prospect, drawing interest from universities such as Temple, Rutgers, and the University of Minnesota. His coaches and teammates remembered him as a special kid with a bright future, a young man who was always cracking jokes and was well-liked by his peers.
In the wake of the shooting, the community was left in shock and mourning. Authorities immediately began an investigation, searching for a motive and canvassing the neighborhood for any information that could lead to the person or persons responsible for JaMeer's death.
