In the Cramer Hill neighborhood of Camden, New Jersey, a promising young life was tragically cut short. Sincere Howard, a 17-year-old Black male, was a junior at Woodrow Wilson High School, known for his love of basketball and a smile that could brighten any room. He had recently been celebrated as one of Camden's 'most improved students,' a testament to his renewed dedication to his studies after a challenging sophomore year.
He was on a positive path, staying out of trouble and focusing on his future.
On the early morning of Easter Sunday, April 21, 2019, the sense of hope surrounding Sincere's future was shattered by a burst of gunfire. Shortly after midnight, Sincere was in Von Nieda Park, a place generally considered a safe haven for local youths to gather. He was with 19-year-old Shirleen Caban and another 18-year-old female friend when the shooting occurred. Both Sincere and Shirleen were fatally wounded in the attack. The third teenager, a resident of Sewell, was also shot but survived her injuries. Sincere was found lying on the ground next to a car, having been shot numerous times. The brutal violence of the act sent shockwaves through the quiet neighborhood, leaving a community to grapple with the senseless loss of two of its young members.
In the wake of the double homicide, a profound sense of grief and a demand for answers enveloped the community. Vigils and rallies were held as residents mourned the deaths of Sincere and Shirleen and called for an end to the violence that had claimed their lives. Sincere's mother, Lissette Molina, became a vocal advocate for justice for her son, tirelessly organizing events to keep his memory alive and maintaining constant communication with the prosecutor's office.
