In the late afternoon of a Wednesday in Newark, New Jersey, tragedy struck on the 900 block of 18th Avenue. On March 25, 2020, Jumar T. Miranda, a 22-year-old male, was caught in a burst of gunfire that erupted at approximately 4:41 p.m. He was not the sole victim of the violence that shattered the day; two other men were also struck by bullets in the triple shooting.
Emergency services rushed all three victims to University Hospital in an effort to save their lives.
Despite the medical attention he received, Miranda succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at 5:33 p.m. that evening. The condition of the other two victims varied, with one being listed in critical condition and the other in stable condition, leaving a community to grapple with the aftermath of the incident.
The Essex County Prosecutor's Office Homicide/Major Crimes Task Force, in conjunction with detectives from the Newark Police Department, immediately launched an investigation into the deadly shooting. As of the days following the event, no arrests had been made, and the suspect or suspects involved in the shooting remained at large. Authorities were actively seeking information from the public to help piece together the events that led to the fatal encounter and bring those responsible to justice. The investigation into the triple shooting was described as active and ongoing.
