In the fall of 2020, a young Black man named Bryant Jabbar Banks Jr., 23, of Salem City, New Jersey, lost his life in a violent shooting. The incident occurred on the night of October 2, 2020, during a house party in Penns Grove, New Jersey. Banks was attending the gathering in St. Thomas' Park when gunfire erupted around 11 p.m. He was fatally wounded and pronounced dead shortly after the shooting.
Another man was also injured in the incident but survived his wounds.
The investigation into the shooting led authorities to two suspects: Kiyon B. Johnson, 22, of Salem, and Rayneer T. Foster, 25, of Penns Grove. Surveillance footage reportedly captured the two men leaving the scene of the party with firearms. Following the investigation, a Salem County grand jury indicted both Johnson and Foster.
The charges brought against the two men were extensive and included first-degree murder, attempted murder, aggravated assault, and various weapons offenses. The Salem County Prosecutor's Office has been actively pursuing the case, seeking justice for Bryant Banks and his family. The shooting was a stark reminder of the devastating impact of gun violence on communities.
