In the summer of 2021, the life of 34-year-old Marcus Lee Reddick, a Black male from Penns Grove, New Jersey, was abruptly cut short. On July 12th, while sitting in his car in the neighboring community of Carneys Point Township, Reddick was fatally shot. The incident sent ripples of concern through the local area, prompting a significant investigation by law enforcement.
Known to his friends and family as 'Fresh,' Marcus was remembered as a man with a heart of gold who cherished his
family, especially his two children. He had a playful nature, often greeting loved ones with a 'mean mug' that would quickly dissolve into a laugh. His presence was a vibrant part of the Salem and Penns Grove communities where he had grown up and received his education.
As investigators delved into the circumstances surrounding the shooting, their efforts led them to a suspect. On October 6, 2021, Nayhir S. Bland, a 22-year-old resident of Carneys Point Township, was indicted by a grand jury on a charge of first-degree murder in connection with Reddick's death. Authorities accused Bland of being the individual who fired the fatal shots into the vehicle where Marcus was seated. The indictment marked a critical turning point in the case, bringing a measure of hope for justice to a grieving family and a community shaken by the senseless violence that had claimed one of its own.
