On the evening of November 19, 2020, a tragic event unfolded in Newark, New Jersey, that cut short the life of Rachel Swisher, a 27-year-old Caucasian female. At approximately 7:30 p.m. in the Central Ward of the city, on a stretch of West Kinney Street near Halsey Street, gunshots rang out. Rachel was fatally wounded in the incident and was pronounced dead at the scene at 7:49 p.m.
Another person was also wounded in the shooting and was transported to University Hospital, where they were listed in stable condition.
Rachel, who was born on February 4, 1993, in York, Pennsylvania, was a former resident of the area and a graduate of Northeastern High School. A mother of three children, she was survived by her mother and two sisters. Her untimely death prompted an immediate and ongoing investigation led by the Essex County Prosecutor's Office Homicide/Major Crimes Task Force, in conjunction with detectives from the Newark Police Department.
In the wake of the shooting, law enforcement officials have appealed to the public for any information that might lead to an arrest. Despite the active and continuing investigation, no suspects have been publicly identified, and no arrests have been made in connection with Rachel Swisher's death. Her family held a private graveside service at Sacred Heart Cemetery in Wellsville, New York, as those who knew her continue to hope for justice.
